We are much more comfortable attempting to justify our current beliefs than allow Scripture to change our beliefs.

-AlanAlan Knoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07452247058550736803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4589517995412770159.post-64520020913833953502009-04-21T11:37:00.000-05:002009-04-21T11:37:00.000-05:00Alan, thanks for the link to Alan Bandy's post.
...Alan, thanks for the link to Alan Bandy's post.

I do agree with both you and Steve (hi, Steve) that there are some issues when interpreting these angeloi as human messengers. So then the question is: why do so many try to?Maëlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14413309286655265584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4589517995412770159.post-89800743785629136922009-04-21T09:37:00.000-05:002009-04-21T09:37:00.000-05:00It's always been my understanding that word usage ...It's always been my understanding that word usage elsewhere in the same author's writing (either the immediate context of the book in consideration, or other books by the same author) helps to shed light on the usage in question.

With that in mind, does John ever use "angel" to refer to humans? In the rest of the Revelation, no. In his epistles, not that I'm aware of. In his gospel, again not that I'm aware of.

Furthermore, nowhere else in the NT can I recall "angel" being used for a human.

So to apply it to humans in this passage seems to be problematic at best.

I'm enjoying this series, Mael! There are many problems in interpreting these angeloi as human messengers, whether or not they are "senior pastors".

-AlanAlan Knoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07452247058550736803noreply@blogger.com
